Unlike neighboring Rhode Island, Massachusetts requires applicants to demonstrate specific engagement with local Buddhist communities. With 85% of Massachusetts residents living in urban areas, this initiative will focus on urban centers like Boston, where Buddhist temples and cultural centers are concentrated. The program aims to achieve three primary outcomes in Massachusetts: increased awareness of Buddhist teachings on equity among community leaders, development of culturally sensitive dialogue frameworks, and establishment of sustainable community partnerships. These outcomes matter because Massachusetts has seen rising tensions between traditional Buddhist institutions and newer, more diverse practitioner communities. The implementation approach will involve training 50 community facilitators through workshops at Harvard University's Buddhist studies center and subsequent community dialogues in Worcester and Springfield. Massachusetts's strong transportation infrastructure will enable participants from across the state to attend these sessions. The program will particularly focus on the state's western regions, where rural communities have limited access to Buddhist resources. ## Buddhist Practice in Massachusetts's Urban Centers Massachusetts's urban Buddhist communities will be central to this initiative, with key partnerships forming in Boston's Allston-Brighton neighborhood, home to significant Buddhist populations. ## Who Should Apply in Massachusetts Eligible applicants include Massachusetts-based Buddhist organizations, community groups with a demonstrated commitment to racial equity, and educational institutions with Buddhist studies programs. Applicants must show a clear understanding of Massachusetts's Buddhist landscape and how their proposed dialogue series will engage local communities. ## Measuring Success in Massachusetts Success will be measured through participant feedback, the number of community partnerships established, and documented changes in community discourse around racial equity and Buddhism.
