Summary

This program is designed for public K‑12 schools, school districts, or educational collaboratives in Massachusetts who wish to move toward decarbonization and energy efficiency in their school buildings. Private schools are not eligible. To participate, the school or district must own the building (or have a long‑term lease of at least 20 years) and commit to keeping the building in use as a public school for at least the next two decades. Another eligibility criterion is that in one or more of the most recent three school years, at least 40% of the student population must have been from low‑income families.

The purpose of the assistance is to help with planning and technical work—such as assessing how to reduce emissions, improving energy efficiency, electrifying systems, evaluating renewable energy options, and creating roadmaps for decarbonizing multiple buildings if desired. Schools can choose from several studies: a full comprehensive building assessment for an individual building, a portfolio roadmap for multiple facilities, or a focused study looking at specific measures. The support also includes analyses of renewable energy feasibility, energy incentives, and renewable energy certificates.

Participants may receive technical assistance valued up to $250,000. The funding is not a typical grant of cash to spend, but rather resources, expert consulting, studies, analysis, and guidance to help inform future capital projects (e.g., upgrades, equipment, energy systems) so they’re aligned with sustainability and cost‑effectiveness goals.

Enrollment is rolling (i.e. applications are accepted continuously), but because funding is limited, early enrollment is encouraged.

In short, this opportunity is best suited for public K‑12 entities in that state that serve a significant low‑income population and want help planning for greener, cleaner, more efficient school facilities. If you like, I can sketch out what a strong application would look like.

If you are located in Massachusetts and working in the area of Secondary Education, this funding opportunity may be a good fit. For more relevant grant options that support your work and priorities, visit The Grant Portal and use the Search Grant tool to find opportunities.
