Massachusetts faces a unique challenge in addressing the climate vulnerability of its elderly population, with 16% of residents aged 65 or older. The state's dense urban areas and historic neighborhoods often lack green spaces, exacerbating heat island effects that disproportionately affect seniors. In Boston, for example, temperatures can be 6°F higher than surrounding areas during heatwaves. Who Should Apply in Massachusetts? Non-profits with experience working with senior centers and organizations familiar with the state's elder services infrastructure are well-positioned to lead outreach programs. Massachusetts' Elder Services Program provides a framework for applicants to build upon. To succeed, applicants must demonstrate understanding of the state's complex network of senior centers and Area Agencies on Aging. Massachusetts' Aging Services Network comprises 28 Elder Service Agencies, making it one of the most comprehensive systems in the country. Readiness Requirements in Massachusetts include collaboration with local senior centers and ability to navigate the state's elder services infrastructure. The grant will support outreach programs that provide resources and information on coping strategies for heatwaves and severe weather, leveraging the state's existing network of senior centers and elder services organizations.
